Support different materials on different steps for same 3D objects

I'd like to switch from one material (say metal) in a step to plastic, glass or X-ray on another step, on the same 3D object or sub-object, so I can show configuration options or show exciting way to look inside a product.

Yes! Especially because it allows consistency, the way we have to do it right now means the part has to disappear/reappear, which is jarring and breaks continuity.
