When creating Jigs, which includes many parts (3D objects), it could be useful to have a panel with a list of all the objects avaiable in the scene to help the user selecting them.
This feature could also be extended in Viewer, in case a user, while going through the steps wants to select an item in the scene and get to know more info / specs about it.

Hierarchy is huge indeed, it will make só much, so much better.
Hierarchies are traditionally indeed used for selections and those hierarchical functionality like: parenting, grouping, hiding, deleting, renaming objects etc.
It will take all the frustration out selecting small parts, or bigger parts obscured by small parts and more.
Check the implementation by vectary for a good reference

We would likely consider this as a means of selection (for transformation in a separate "properties" or "transform" panel) but support hierarchical functionality like: parenting, grouping, hiding, deleting, renaming objects, within this object tree hierarchy.
